At first, modify all tabs -> spaces . Because these changes will done during other refactoring, makes it very difficult to review the code changes. 

I think its better to do these before any other refactoring.

This is way too much for the team to review at once. Let's start with fixing the checkstyle and some simple fixes. For example, some of the variables (not all) went from public to private.
